Forest department officials in Meghalaya's south-west Garo Hills district have arrested a hunter accused of hunting the endangered barking deer.
According to reports, the accused has been identified as Sukumar Rema (52).
Rema, a local resident of the quaint village of New Harigaon, nestled near the tranquil Mukdangra area, finds himself embroiled in a controversial allegation - the alleged killing of a critically endangered barking deer.
After a week-long investigation, the forest department caught Rema from his residence.
They also recovered a part of the deer carcass.
Investigation revealed that Rema intended to consume the meat and potentially sell the deer skin.
The department is investigating the involvement of the accused in other similar activities in the district.
