Manipur: Protests Erupt Following Retired Official’s Abduction and Murder

The recent abduction and murder of a 65-year-old retired government official in Manipur has ignited widespread protests throughout the state.

Thokchom Ibomcha Singh, who formerly served in the Settlement department, was reportedly kidnapped on June 18 from his home in Khangabok village, Thoubal district. His body, bearing gunshot wounds, was discovered in Leishang Hiden moat near Manipur University on Sunday, June 30.

Family members suspect that extortion was the motive behind the killing. Thokchom Ongbi Kim, the widow of the deceased, claimed that the kidnappers demanded money and subjected her husband to torture during his captivity.

In response to the murder, a Joint Action Committee (JAC) was formed, which submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Monday. The JAC called for the immediate arrest of those involved and condemned the heinous crime.

In Khangabok village, women protesters blocked National Highway 102 and other roads, demanding justice. They have vowed not to claim the body until all responsible parties are brought to justice.

Manipur police have opened an investigation and are actively searching for the culprits. So far, no group has taken responsibility for the abduction and murder.
