Opposition Calls For Third Party Intervention To Stop Rising Violence In Manipur
Former Chief Minister of Manipur and opposition leader O Ibobi Singh suggested the Manipur government to seek the intervention of the Central Government as a neutral mediator to initiate talks and resolve the ten-month-long violence in the northeastern state.
Ibobi suggested an immediate declaration by both sides to cease firing and disarm them, and also warned of strict action against violators.
He believes this will stop the violence and pave the way for dialogue. He presented these recommendations during a brief discussion on the last day of the fifth session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly, emphasizing the toll the violence has taken on lives and property. Since its outbreak on May 3 last year.
In response to Ibobi's suggestions, Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh said that dialogue initiatives were already underway.
He highlighted two meetings held with MLAs and announced plans for a third meeting involving the chairpersons of the Hill Area Committee.
However, with regard to disarmament, CM Biren Singh cited complications, including one side resorting to arms due to grievances, while the other side involves SoO militants.
The Manipur Chief Minister also revealed his discussion with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Delhi, where he assured that all necessary steps are being taken to restore normalcy in Manipur.
