Chariot for Ratha Yatra Festival Attacked in Imphal

In the early hours of Friday, July 5th, unidentified armed assailants attacked a chariot being prepared for the upcoming Ratha Yatra festival in Imphal, Manipur.

The incident took place at approximately 12:30 AM near the Sana Konung intersection in Imphal.

Reports indicate that the attackers approached in a car from the direction of Advance Hospital, fired two shots at the stationary chariot, and quickly escaped towards Palace Gate.

The Imphal East district police were promptly alerted and arrived at the scene to conduct an investigation and search for the culprits.

The motive behind the attack remains unknown.

This incident occurs amidst ongoing unrest in Manipur and social media debates about whether the Ratha Yatra festival, scheduled for June 8th, should proceed. Last year, similar concerns led to a scaled-down celebration of the festival, with only ritual ceremonies taking place and the traditional procession being cancelled.
