Assam news | Floods: Death Toll Rises to 14, Over 5 Lakh Affected

The flood situation in Assam remains dire as of Sunday, June 2, with the death toll rising to 14 and over 5.35 lakh people affected across 10 districts. Three more deaths, including two children, were reported in the past 24 hours—two in Cachar and one in Nagaon, according to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA).
Nagaon is the worst-hit district with 3,03,567 affected people, followed by Cachar (1,09,798), Hojai (86,382), and Karimganj (20,463). Around 39,269 displaced individuals are in 193 relief camps across six districts. Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, with efforts from the NDRF, SDRF, Fire & Emergency Services, and local authorities.

Infrastructure damage includes breached embankments and destroyed roads and bridges. Rivers such as Kopili, Barak, and Kushiyara are flowing above danger levels. Assam's extensive river network makes it prone to severe floods, impacting development. Historically, the state has faced significant floods, with notable years including 1954, 1962, and 2004. The annual average loss due to floods is around Rs 200 crore, with severe years seeing losses upwards of Rs 500 crore.
