Petition filed in Supreme Court to stop the appointment of new Election Commissioner of the Center
In the wake of Arun Goyal's resignation as Election Commissioner, an application has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to restrain the Union Government from appointing a new EC as per the new Election Commissioner Act.
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court to restrain the government from appointing the Chief Election Commissioner and other ECs as per Sections 7 and 8 of the Chief Election Commissioner and other Election Commissioners (Conditions of Service and Appointment of Conditions of Office Act 2023) .
In a shock move just weeks before the Lok Sabha elections, Election Commissioner Arun Goyal resigned on Saturday.
President Draupadi Murmu accepted his resignation. With Goyal's resignation, there are now two vacancies in the election panel.
There was already a vacancy in the Election Commission of India and now this post will remain with Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar only.His tenure was till 2027.
Goyal is a retired IAS officer of Punjab cadre. He took charge as Election Commissioner in November 2022.
His appointment was challenged in the Supreme Court by the independent election monitoring body Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).
